PASSPORT TO ENCLAVIA Electronic Press Kit BOOK INFORMATION Passport to Enclavia: Travels in Search of a European Identity What does it mean to be European? The answer lies in Europe’s forgotten enclaves - tiny fragments of one country cut off and completely surrounded by another, stuck between two different cultures, currencies and sometimes even languages. Renowned author Vitali Vitaliev (Life as a Literary Device) explores the idiosyncrasies of these enclaves and the state of European identity. An acclaimed investigative journalist, Vitali uncovers the ten year old roots of the current EU crisis, providing a timelessly topical perspective on one of recent history’s key events, the birth of the Euro. Passport to Enclavia is an homage to Europe, in all its marvellous diversity. What the Critics Say: “Imagine Michael Palin, Clive Anderson and Bill Bryson all rolled into one and you’ll have some idea of what to expect.” - Ego “Vitali Vitaliev is that rare thing: a comic writer who is also serious. And what he says about the shifting currents of a Europe trying to redefine its identity in the wake of so many changed geo-political realities is never less than compelling. Read this book for the pleasure of Vitaliev’s wry take on human folly and for his penetrating analysis of a continent grappling with manifold dilemmas. He is, as always, a great traveling companion.” Douglas Kennedy “This exploration of European identity makes for a fascinating, often very funny, journey; and like all the best travellers, Vitaliev can also be magnificently grumpy.” - Geographical “Vitaliev’s good book is about the nature of enclaves, the futility of frontiers and the ingenious and amusing ways that people bothered by customs, border guards, permits and forms manage to swat them away with minimum fuss.” - European Voice “An ironic and witty commentator on life.” - The Spectator PASSPORT TO ENCLAVIA Electronic Press Kit AUTHOR INFORMATION Vitali Vitaliev was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He first made a name for himself in the then Soviet Union, writing satirical journalism in Krokodil and other publications, exposing the activities of organised crime and the all-permeating corruption in the collapsing country. His fearless stance ultimately led to his defection in 1990, following months of persecution by the KGB. He has appeared regularly on TV and radio in the UK (Have I Got News For You, Saturday Night Clive, After Dark, Start the Week), was a writer/researcher for QI and has contributed to newspapers and magazines all over the world. He is the author of eleven books, including cult classics such as Dreams on Hitler's Couch, Borders Up, Vitali's Ireland and Life as a Literary Device.
